AAA Projects Around 80 Million Americans Are to Travel During Thanksgiving Holiday

The Thanksgiving Holiday is a week away and if you’re planning to travel at least 50 miles or more to spend time with family and friends, you will be one of nearly 79.9 million others. AAA says nearly 80 million people will travel over 50 miles during the Thanksgiving Holiday, between Tuesday, November 26th and Monday, December 2nd. This year’s projected number of travelers is up 1.7 million people when compared to 2023, and 2 million more than pre-pandemic numbers (2019).

Out of the nearly 80 million travelers, around 71.5 million will be traveling via automobile and 5.84 million by air travel. Around 2.28 million will be traveling through other means such as trains.

Motorists traveling won’t have to worry about higher gas prices, AAA shows the national average at $3.26 a gallon and with falling oil prices, the national average could dip below $2 a gallon for the first time in almost 4 years before Thanksgiving.

The worst time to travel prior to Thanksgiving will be between the hours of 1 pm and 7 pm with the best travel times to avoid traffic delays being early morning hours prior to 10 am.
